University of Utah - Huntsman Mental Health Institute

At the University of Utah’s new Huntsman Mental Health Institute Crisis Care Center, creating a supportive environment for patients, clinicians, and staff was essential to the project’s success. HB Workplaces partnered closely with FFKR Architects and the University and Institute’s teams to furnish a wide range of environments from open office workstations and private offices, to waiting areas, training rooms, and patient rooms. The OAC team was focused on establishing a calm, professional atmosphere that supported both HMHI’s clinical mission and their culture of innovation.

One of the project’s key challenges was selecting behavioral health-appropriate furniture that didn’t feel overly utilitarian. The solution was a thoughtful blend of Krug’s behavioral health offerings and trusted pieces from Herman Miller Healthcare and other MillerKnoll brands—chosen for their ability to blend into any healthcare environment without appearing overly clinical. The result is a collection of spaces that feel intuitive and welcoming while meeting rigorous behavioral health standards. Since installation, the client has shared positive feedback about how the space supports patient comfort, staff flexibility, and streamlined day-to-day operations.
